Lightship – Jim Burns, C. Evans
Paper Tiger Surrey, 1985
125pp, full color illustrations throughout
Jim Burns turned away from an RAF piloting career to devote himself to painting. He quickly found himself with book cover commissions on both sides of the Atlantic and soon established himself as a deft and imaginative artist for the genre.
Additionally, he is well-known in fantasy genres.
Burns wields strong color palette and bold, sumptuous textures, often embodying his subjects (and their alien crafts) with rich, unearthly materials and uncanny shapes. Still, there is a tangible, familiar quality to his subjects that draws the viewer in for a closer look at the detail populating his pieces.
